Alain Prost is coming to the Goodwood Festival of Speed

I heard about Sabbath from school friends, and that first album cover scared the hell out of me, but the music blew me away. He called their debut album his favourite and cited bassist Geezer Butler as a personal hero. Geezer’s melodic and powerful bass lines made me want to play bass. Now I’m lucky enough to call him a friend.

Guitarist Jon Donais added: I grew up on Ozzy in the ’80s thanks to MTV, and later dove deep into Sabbath in the ’90s. I’m absolutely a fan. The sentiment across the band is clear: being part of Sabbath’s historic send-off is a deeply personal and meaningful milestone. Running from Friday through Sunday, the second edition of the festival promises a nostalgic throwback to the golden years of racing.

Capturing the spirit and style reminiscent of the famed Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom. Festival events manager Mira Tull described the weekend as a unique blend of fast-paced action and retro glamour. She explained that our main focus is, of course, the races, the cars, and the drivers.

We also aim to create a lively, carnival-like atmosphere reminiscent of the Goodwood Revival 2025. We’re encouraging people to dress in 1960s and 1970s fashion and immerse themselves in the era. Set at the iconic Teretonga Park, the event will feature a star-studded racing lineup, with both historic and contemporary drivers taking to the track in classic machines.

Channelling the unmistakable charm and nostalgia of the Goodwood Revival. Boasting a record 160 entries and a lineup of star drivers, this year's event is set to deliver an exciting celebration of classic racing and vintage style. Festival events manager Mira Tull expressed her excitement at the overwhelming response.

We’ve got about 160 entries, a record number, and some of the biggest names in motorsport are coming, she said. The event will feature headline drivers including four-time Bathurst 1000 champion Greg Murphy. Two-time World Touring Car champion Paul Radisich and McLaren Racing’s first female driver, Emma Gilmour.

They’re joined by Kiwi motorsport legends such as five-time New Zealand Trans-Am champion Kayne Scott. Rally icon Hayden Paddon, five-time Bathurst winner Steven Richards, and fan favourites like Charlie O’Brien, Jonny Reid, Brendon Leitch, Andrew Waite, and Brett Riley.

Tull asked where else can you witness so many motorsport legends behind the wheel. Competing in a festival-style event filled with excitement both on and off the track? Inspired by the UK’s iconic Goodwood Revival 2025, the George Begg Festival offers more than just racing. Fans can soak up the retro atmosphere through events like Trends on the Track. A fashion competition encouraging guests to don vintage 1960s and 1970s outfits.

There’s also Show and Shine, where enthusiasts showcase their prized classic, vintage, and uniquely styled vehicles across categories. Best Italian, Best American, Best British, Best Display Vehicle, and People’s Choice. We’ve already got 40 entries in the Show and Shine, and that’s fantastic for the first time running it, Tull added.

Another crowd-pleaser debuting this year is the Drummond Dash, which sees star drivers co-driving with competitors in a fast-paced challenge full of laughs and fierce bragging rights. Tull said that it’ll be mates against mates, real entertaining stuff. More than 1500 people are expected to attend the three-day event, with tickets still available.

Alex Brundle's Passion for Racing Minis at Goodwood Revival

There are few cars more beloved at Goodwood Revival than a Mini. They're a constant highlight in the Members’ Meeting reels, and that trend is set to continue in 2025. With 14 Minis, including both Cooper and 1275GT models, expected to take part in the 82nd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport.

Among them is a Mini entered by Alex Brundle, a renowned motorsport figure and a regular competitor at Goodwood. He’ll be racing in five events throughout the weekend, and entering a sixth, the Whitmore Cup, with his own Morris Mini Cooper S. We caught up with him during testing to hear how his preparations were progressing before the weekend.

Ahead of handing the car over to Aimee Watts, who will be behind the wheel when the flag drops on Sunday. This is essentially a BMC heritage shell, Alex explains. It’s not a racing car from the original period, but it’s a Mini shell that we found and fully prepared for racing. The car was prepared by Nick Swift’s company, Swiftune, which is renowned for its Mini racing expertise and long-standing connection with Goodwood since 2003.

Goodwood Revival: A Tribute to Nick Swift’s Mastery

Nick is like the Don of the Mini Mafia, a total legend. He put this car together for me, and it was built side by side with Willow, his personal Mini. I said, I want it like that, because it's a car I know well. I drove it last year at the Revival, for instance. It’s a car I’m very familiar with, and I wanted to replicate that, so here it is.

The car has an impressive pedigree. Nick Swift’s Minis are regularly at the front of the pack, but Brundle was quick to point out that good preparation is just part of the equation. There’s a real skill to driving these cars quickly, and Goodwood’s fast layout highlights both the strengths and weaknesses of the Mini.

It’s a car you can push hard without taking much risk. You can carry a lot of speed through the middle of the corner and gain time there. But you don’t have the power of the cars around you, so you’ve got to be brave on the brakes. I think that’s why Minis are such fan favorites at Goodwood.

Mini Magic at Goodwood: Grit, Grip and the Thrill of the Drive

People love watching them, as they might seem to be losing out on the straights, appearing to be much slower than the other cars, but they’re incredibly bold in the corners. They’re just fantastic. You look at the car and can’t believe how much grip and ability it has in the corners. Of course, being front-wheel drive, you can use the rear axle to help with braking.

I’ve never driven a car where the effort directly correlates with speed as much as it does in a Mini. The harder you push, the faster you go, and that’s the beauty of it. With high-power cars, you can go in too fast and end up coming out slower. But with a Mini, there’s no ‘too fast’ in the corners. You just get it sideways and power through, which is fantastic.

His passion for driving the Mini is evident as he describes the thrill of racing it at Goodwood. However, it will be Aimee Watts who gets to have all the fun at the Members’ Meeting. She claimed the HRDC Championship in 2023 while driving a Mini. So she’ll likely be right on the pace when Official Practice begins on Saturday.

If you’re not careful, they can wear through tires quickly, so there’s a lot to manage with them. It’s just a 1.0-litre engine, but it’s a real gem. It revs up to about 8,000 rpm, so it’s like a little buzz box. You’re constantly working the four-speed gearbox. Of course, there are racing modifications, just like in the original period, but it’s incredible how an engine that old can handle so much stress.

It sounds like Brundle would love to get behind the wheel himself, but he’s content to leave it in the hands of a true Mini expert. I’m just ensuring the car runs smoothly today. The goal is to ensure that when I hand the car over, it’s in great shape and ready to compete. And it is. That’s one of the fastest lap times we’ve seen here, so we’re happy with how it’s running.

Brundle has full confidence in Aimee Watts, who will be taking over the driving duties. Aimee’s a very skilled driver, and it’s fantastic to have her behind the wheel. She’s also a great example of female inclusion in motorsport. There are many talented female historic racers, and she’s one of them. I’m excited to give her the chance to shine. She’s brilliant in a Mini.
